I, Too, Sing America by Langston Hughes

A repeat, but I thought it was a good time to post this one again.

I, Too, Sing America

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

Langston Hughes was born in 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. Through his poetry, fiction and plays he tried to accurately portray the African-American experience in early to mid-twentieth century America. He made major contributions to the Harlem Rennaisance, and is known for incorporating jazz influences into his work.

After what went down with Proposition 8 in California (which took away civil rights from gay Californians) I think this beautiful poem, by a Gay African-American, is particularly timely and moving.

  5. Thank you for posting this poem. I heard someone else quote a line from it this week and wanted to read it again. When I first read it some 35 years ago what happened on November 4th seemed like an impossibility in my lifetime. How wonderful to read it again but this time from a much more hopeful perspective. Now I'm crying again too.

  7. oh, zeke!
we had an amendment in colorado a few elections ago (in the 90's) that did the same thing as prop 8 in california. it passed because nobody bothered to read the amendment carefully and it was written to fool people in exactly that manner. it was thrown out by the state court because it was unconstitutional....so my point is this: don't give up! it's not over! if you guys can pass prop 2 then you can have prop 8 thrown out.

    k- that's all, thanks.
