Separation by W.S. Merwin

Separation

Your absence has gone through me
Like thread through a needle.
Everything I do is stitched with its color.

William S. Merwin was born in New York City in 1927, the son of a Presbyterian minister. He has written more than 20 books of poetry, won numerous prestigious awards, and served as Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. He currently resides in Hawaii.

  9. Kris,

The poem is about missing someone. Instead of just saying "I miss you," Merwin says "Your absences goes through me like thread through a needle." He goes a step further and says that everything he does is stitched with the color. He is thinking of the person all of the time.
