Separation by W.S. Merwin
Separation
Your absence has gone through me
Like thread through a needle.
Everything I do is stitched with its color.
William S. Merwin was born in New York City in 1927, the son of a Presbyterian minister. He has written more than 20 books of poetry, won numerous prestigious awards, and served as Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. He currently resides in Hawaii.

tragically romantic....this is perfect.
An American Haiku.
When was this written?
That really resonates with me. Breaks my heart.
Hi Jennifer,
"Separation" was first published in Poetry Magazine in 1962.
oh, i read this right after dropping my boyfriend off at the train, very beautiful, makes me think of my great grandma embroidering
i love it.
Hi everyone...
Iam in total confusion about what exactly this poem means. I got many ways of looking at this poem... Kindly someone explain what this means...
Oh I love this one! The is beautiful - simplistic. rich.
Kris,
The poem is about missing someone. Instead of just saying "I miss you," Merwin says "Your absences goes through me like thread through a needle." He goes a step further and says that everything he does is stitched with the color. He is thinking of the person all of the time.
Amazing. This has been my favorite for some time now.
