An Anonymous Poem from Iran

Friday the 19th of June, 2009
Tomorrow, Saturday
Tomorrow is a day of destiny
Tonight the cries of Allah-o Akhbar
Are heard louder and louder than the nights before

Where is this place?
Where is this place where every door is closed?
Where is this place where people are simply calling God?
Where is this place where the sound of Allah-o Akhbar gets louder and louder?
I wait every night to see if the sounds will get louder and whether the number increases
It shakes me
I wonder if God is shaken

Where is this place where so many innocent people are entrapped?
Where is this place where no one comes to our aid?
Where is this place where only with our silence we are sending our voices to the world?
Where is this place where the young shed blood and then people go and pray?
Standing on that same blood and pray?

Where is this place where the citizens are called vagrants?
Where is this place? You want me to tell you?
This place is Iran
The homeland of you and me
This place is Iran

One cannot read this poem with the same conviction as the author. The video is much more powerful as the author's voice, her voice, quivers with pain and anguish. I have never been so moved by a reading as I was in hearing this video poem. My heart soars to her right now. I hope peace can be found soon. Very moving video.

Very awesome poem. The words jump with tension and the situation surrounding it made my hair raise.

I really love how simple this is, and how easily it plays off the current events!

Thankyou for sharing this poem, this recitation.
The air in England is hot, stuffy, but there is peace here. Tonight somewhere there is peace - and elsewhere... there are simply rooftops, and darkness. And cries to Allah.. no wonder we can never be at peace or satisfied as humans. Aren't we always aware in some echo of ourselves, that the prayers of our other selves are not being heeded?

This poem isn't "enjoyable" or "amazing" or "awesome." It's sobering a sobering slap of perspective.

That time in Iran was so unbelievable - I usually stay outside of media events. But this was no media event. I somehow was online for a few days right before the election. I felt so much hope. It reminded me of when I was young and protesting the war in Vietnam or canvasing on the streets of Queens,New York asking people to vote for the equal rights amendment. And just like then I could not believe that peace would not win, that justice would fail, that kindness would not prevail. I just hope that beautiful woman is safe and knows that she is still being heard. I also want to agree with Michelle Johnson - her voice makes this poem quite unforgettable. Thanks so much for this and your other posts. (I found this because I woke up at 1am thinking about Yeats' poem that you also posted. You are lovely)
